What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compressive neuropathy in the upper extremity and is caused by median nerve compression or median nerve entrapment in the wrist. Women are five times more likely to develop the disease than men and the age of onset is between 30 and 60.
Symptoms of Carpal tunnel syndrome
Symptoms of Carpal tunnel syndrome are the numbness and numbness of the thumb, second and third fingers. There is a stomachache that seems to be stuck on the upper part of the thumb, and sometimes it may appeal to the shoulder pain. Sometimes the pain is felt in half of the nose of the 4th finger or in the whole finger, and the symptoms usually get worse at night.
- It is difficult to pull the bottle cap or turn the key suddenly because the force is missing from the wrist.
- Repeated use of the hand, or bending or keeping the wrist joint for long periods of time will cause pain and sensory disturbance. Symptoms persist and the thumb muscles contract.
- When my hands become numb and try to hold my hands tightly, I sometimes feel burning pain.
- I can not hold things hard and I can drop them. When my symptoms get worse, I can not feel my hand.
- It becomes difficult to do sophisticated operation like sewing.
Oriental Medicine Classify
The carpal tunnel syndrome can be classified according to the cause, such as wind-cold-dampness and lack of blood (기혈부족). In Oriental medicine, diseases associated with musculoskeletal pain are classified into categories of numbness-disease. "Emperor's Inner Circle" SoMun 소문(素問) In the Qi-Blood(기혈) theory, It means 'between the patterns of the flesh, it is a meeting place of the valley, and it leads to the well.' In other words, carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the inability to communicate well.
Treatment
Most of the carpal tunnel syndrome is recommended for non-surgical treatment. The goal of non-surgical treatment is to reduce the pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. In the early days, wear a wrist restrainer at night and wear it for 3 to 4 weeks during the day if possible. In order to reduce inflammation and pain, cold treatment is performed initially, and heat treatment is applied to increase blood flow and smooth tendon movement. Initially, exercise therapy that promotes tendon movement is very important. Because the circulation of tile blood is not seen smoothly in Oriental medicine, it is treated with the aim of smoothly circulating the circulation of blood.
